About the role
This position plays a critical role within the St Vincent’s and Mater Clinical School to deliver teaching and pastoral care within the Clinical School and associated learning sites. You will work in collaboration with Academic and Professional administrative colleagues, including Heads of Discipline, Discipline Leaders, Clinical Placement staff and medical education staff to provide effective and efficient leadership. You will promote strategic partnerships and links with stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
It is a requirement that appointees for this role have a clinical position with St Vincent’s Public Health Hospital, Sydney.
- Promote the National School to key stakeholders including those of St Vincent’s Healthcare, hospitals and other medical practices within the area, including undertaking meetings with doctors, organisations and agencies to inform them of the National School and its purpose.
- Take responsibility for curriculum timetabling, preparation and delivery for students.
- Assist with student placement negotiations within the clinical site in conjunction with Heads of Discipline and with oversight of the Head of Clinical Years,
- Liaise closely with key staff including discipline leaders and UNSW staff.
- Develop student timetables and identify suitable rotations for students in collaboration with key staff, ensuring students are engaged in educationally relevant learning and teaching.
- Oversee and support clinical teaching staff and rotation supervisors who are affiliated with the National School of Medicine, Sydney and any teaching facilities in the area, ensuring quality educational experiences for students.
- Take responsibility for responding to and actioning quality improvement including that provided by the National Quality team.
- Oversee and monitor student progress and wellbeing including liaising regularly with rotation supervisors and discipline leaders to monitor wellbeing and acquisition of skills, referring to student matters or support as appropriate.
- Identifying students requiring educational enhancement and facilitating the required support.
- Undertake teaching which may include bedside and back to base teaching and coordination of Grand Rounds in collaboration with discipline leaders and coordinators.
- Assist in the setting, marking and examinations including OSCE.
- Participate in National School governance, including participation on relevant National School and University committees.
Qualifications, skills & experience
- A medical degree, Registration with AHPRA and Fellowship of a College plus extensive practice-based experience and recognised professional expertise in a medical field.
- A PhD or equivalence in experience and standing.
- Demonstrated significant experience in medical education and teaching.
- Demonstrated advanced professional leadership and reputation within a relevant field.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and develop complex teams and foster a progressive working environment.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills with proven ability to interact effectively with a range of staff in a complex environment.
